Dancing begins with walking, so you're already on your way. Of course, we'll want to jazz it it up, sass it up, and smooth it out, as well as learn some of those patterns you've seen that make dancing look and feel like music in motion. And though dancing begins with walking, we usually don't walk to a Latin rhythm or in close partnership, so along with learning patterns and building them into muscle memory, you'll be developing the ability to lead or follow. We'll begin by developing a strong foundation in the basics of technique and movement, since a few patterns led well will get you a lot further than a hundred of them danced without style and control. How far you go, through Bronze and Silver and Gold levels of dancing, will be up to your own interests and goals. However far you chose to go, you'll want to try out your skills with a wide variety of partners. Studio parties are the best opportunity for practicing what you learn in a cordial atmosphere among people who are also learning. It may be a little scary at first, but we'll all be in it together. I also arrange for gatherings of my students at clubs or restaurants that have a dance floor, where we generally find ourselves with an audience of appreciative onlookers. Sometimes my students even get asked whether they give lessons. |
